SeaCat label originated as a tribute to my late husband Mark Hamilton who had a significant impact on my creative practice. He encouraged my passion for textiles and colour, making unique objects that constantly inspired discussions on blurring boundaries between art and craft. Mark grew up in Jamaica and had a heartfelt connection with its culture and people. We both shared these connections and Jamaica is now a big part of my life.
In Jamaica sea cat is a slang for octopus which is one of my favourite expressions that encompasses the playfulness of the language (octo|pus, puss = cat, octopus = cat from the sea).
SeaCat label is attached mostly to items that are usable and can be placed at home or used as personal objects. I design and make these using primarily wool, natural fabrics and other repurposed materials that I often bring from my travels.
All my work is made by hands with care and attention to detail. Each piece is unique and fibres and fabrics are a mix of new and up-cycled material. It is a result of bringing together my love for different forms, texture and colour, my passion for making, my background in interior design, a lot of slow and meditative process. Every piece celebrates traditional craft in a new and contemporary way that can be enjoyed at your home or as a personal object.
